Last Updated: October 11, 2024
Sometimes, you may reach a point where you need to move a domain to another registrar or another individual. This article is a general overview of the three main types of transfers, and questions you may have regarding each process.
- Incoming Transfers - transferring a domain name to Name.com from your losing registrar.
- Outgoing Transfers - transferring a domain name away from Name.com to your gaining registrar.
- Internal Transfers - transferring a domain name between Name.com accounts
Here are the most frequently asked questions regarding transfers.
Incoming Transfers
How do I transfer a domain name to Name.com?
You can initiate and pay for an incoming transfer from within your Name.com account. Just make sure your domain is unlocked with the losing registrar, and you have the transfer authorization/EPP code specific to your domain. More information here...
How much does an incoming transfer cost?
For incoming transfers, the cost can vary depending on the TLD. Please review our pricing page for current transfer, renewal, and registration prices. The pricing page is for non-premium domains and does not include Premium Domain names. For pricing on Premium domain transfers, please reach out to support.
Is the renewal of the domain included with the transfer?
As long as you haven’t renewed your domain name within the last 45 days, your transfer to Name.com will add a year’s worth of renewal time to your domain name’s current expiration date. However, if you are trying to transfer the domain within 45 days of renewing the domain an additional year will not be added. More information here…
How do I transfer my site without losing my services?
Domains can be prepared ahead of the time so that the domain does not lose connection to services such as websites or email. The domain either needs to have nameservers with another provider or you can change them to Name.com nameservers ahead of the time to reduce downtime. More information here…
Where is my domain name?
During the transfer process, you can check on the status of your transfer from the Transfers in Progress page. You can check to make sure it isn’t stuck or has been cancelled. To navigate there, follow these steps:
- Log into your Name.com account
- Click on the ACCOUNT tab, located at the top, select TOOLS and then select TRANSFERS IN PROGRESS
The incoming transfer failed/canceled, where is my refund?
When an incoming transfer fails, the transfer fee is refunded as account credit automatically. This is done so if you wish to restart the transfer, you can do so instantly without waiting the 3-5 business days that a full refund can sometimes take. If you don't want to reinitiate the transfer, you can use the account credit towards another purchase or renewal. More information here…
My UK, CO.UK, ORG.UK domain has been transferred but I don’t see it in my account!
Name.com has to manually complete the transfer of UK, CO.UK, ORG.UK domains. Please make sure the IPS tag has been updated to NAME-COM and submit a ticket while logged into your account to let us know it’s ready! More information here…
My Country Code TLD (ccTLD) is failing to transfer!
The most common reason ccTLD transfers fail to start is because the registry often has additional requirements for the owner’s contact information. Please ensure that your account contacts are updated and have a valid address for TLD. Many ccTLDs require exact addresses residing either in that country or in other supported regions. The next step is making sure that if the ccTLD requires additional information, that the correct identification type is selected from the dropdown menu and that the identification information is valid and correct. If you’re still having trouble, please reach out to our support team by submitting a ticket!
Outgoing Transfers
Do I need to transfer my domain?
Transferring a domain name away means that you are moving the domain name itself away from Name.com, meaning that you will renew your domain through the new provider. If you’re looking to host your webpage’s content somewhere else, you may not need to transfer your domain name away to do that! Instead, you can connect your domain to your content at the other service using either one of our handy DNS Templates or by getting the nameservers or DNS records from the hosting provider.
How do I transfer a domain name away from Name.com?
To initiate the transfer of your domain away you will first need to perform some steps with the domain name in your Name.com account. You want to unlock your domain and get your transfer authorization/EPP code. Some registrars may also require you to disable whois privacy. You may want to check with the gaining registrar to know if this is a requirement or not. More information here...
How much does an outgoing transfer cost?
Name.com does not have a fee for transferring a domain name away. However, there is usually a transfer fee on the gaining registrar end. You will need to contact the gaining registrar to pay for and initiate the transfer.
My domain is expired, can I still transfer it?
You can still transfer expired domains! As long as it is in your account you can unlock the domain and grab the auth code to start the transfer with your gaining registrar. More information here...
I can’t find my expired domain! How can I get it back so I can transfer it elsewhere?
Sometimes if your domain is expired for a long enough time it is moved out of your account but you can still transfer it. Please submit a ticket while logged into your Name.com account requesting for Name.com to move the domain back to your account. Then you can unlock the domain and get the transfer code so that you can start your transfer successfully with your gaining registrar. More information here...
How do I unlock my domain? Why won't my domain unlock?
You can unlock the domain name from within your Name.com account. If your domain has been registered in the last 60 days, you have transferred it from another registrar recently, or you did not opt out of the ICANN contact change transfer lock, you will be unable to transfer the domain until this 60 day lock period is over. You only need to unlock your domain name to transfer it-- your domain name will still work while locked, and you can still use other providers by making DNS and nameserver changes. More information here...
Where do I find the transfer authorization/EPP code?
You can find the auth code from within your Name.com account. If the domain is not eligible to transfer, the auth code will not display. More information here…
What if there is no EPP code?
Your domain name may not be eligible to transfer-- or, if it’s a .uk or .co.uk domain, or other TLD with special rules, you may need to contact us for further assistance. More information here….
How long does an outgoing transfer take?
Once an outgoing transfer has been submitted, it can take roughly 5-7 days. If you want to expedite this transfer, please contact support and clearly indicate the domain name in the form. We cannot expedite your transfer if the domain name is not listed. More information here...
I changed my mind, how do I cancel my transfer?
When a domain is pending transfer at the registry it can be only canceled by the losing registrar. This means that if you decide you don't want to transfer your domain away from Name.com midway through the process, then we can cancel it as long as it's still pending. The transfer will pend over a 5-7 day period once you complete the purchase. More information here...
Why am I unable to transfer my premium domain name to another registrar?
Some domains are designated by the registry as premium domains. These domains are regarded as higher in value by the registry and can only be transferred to accredited domain registrars. Not all registrars are accredited to be able to support premium domain names.
I transferred the domain, why is it still in my account?
After the outgoing transfer is complete, it might look like the domain is still in your Name.com account for up to a week. This is a ghost image and nothing to worry about. This can occur due to a process that verifies that the outgoing transfer was successful before the domain name is removed. You will not be able to manage the domain in your Name.com account during this time. More information here...
Internal Transfers
How do I internally transfer a domain name to another Name.com account?
You will need to access the account the domain name is in, as well as have the account code of the account you are transferring the domain name to. If someone else owns the account the domain is in, please make sure you give them your account code. More information here...
Where do I find the account code?
The account code can be found on the domain dashboard from within the account.
- Log in to your Name.com account.
