Social Media Day Denver, hosted by Colorado Women in Social Media (CWSM), took place just last week and was a great opportunity for local entrepreneurs and marketers to learn how they can make the most of their social media presence. Here are our biggest takeaways from the conference and some tips that can help you create a stronger social following for yourself or your business.
Take advantage of Facebook Live
One of the biggest recent updates to Facebook is the ability to live stream to friends and followers via Facebook Live. Live streaming is one of the strongest forms of content right now, and tends to lead to more interaction and engagement than traditional video. Although live streaming may seem intimidating, it’s definitely a form of content that you should look into if you want to create a personal connection with your network.
Follow the 70/20/10 rule on Twitter
If you’re struggling to build a Twitter following, one of the best recipes for success is the 70/20/10 rule. 70% of your content should be industry or niche-related material that could be a helpful resource to your followers. 20% should be relevant content and ideas from others, and only 10% should be devoted to promoting yourself or your business.
Add a personal touch on LinkedIn
A little bit of genuine interaction can go a long way on a platform like LinkedIn. Rather than sticking to likes and endorsements, take some time to leave genuine, positive comments about your connections’ accomplishments, articles, and updates. You can also leverage your existing connections to form relationships with influencers in your field. Sending a direct message to a mutual connection for a personal introduction is a great way to begin establishing a business relationship.
Use more (and varied) hashtags on Instagram
Did you know Instagram allows you to use up to 30 hashtags per post? Sure, that may seem like overkill, but hashtags are powerful tools for reaching new audiences. Consistent use of hashtags and interaction with others who are in the same niche as you can vastly increase your followers and engagement on Instagram. Remember to vary your hashtags as well to continue reaching new potential followers.
Start Snapchatting
Snapchat is one of the fastest growing social media networks and offers a huge opportunity to brands. As increasingly more users flock to Snapchat, the app is now a powerhouse for brands who want to expand their audience through sharing quality content. So if you haven’t started using Snapchat yet, whip out our phone and download it ASAP—and if you do have it, do some brainstorming about how you can better use it to promote your brand or services.
Thanks again to the wonderful ladies of CWSM for hosting Social Media Day Denver and offering their wisdom.
