Etsy is an awesome way for sellers around the world to sell their custom goods to an eager audience of buyers. But marketing your Etsy store can be difficult without a simple way to direct your customers to your web store. An easy solution for this problem is forwarding a custom domain name to your Etsy store. The process is much simpler than it sounds and is a quick, affordable way to give your Etsy store a more professional look.
Let’s walk through the steps you’ll need to take to register a custom domain name for your Etsy store and redirect it to your account.
How to link a domain to your Etsy shop
Step 1: Purchase a domain name
Your first step is purchasing your own domain from a registrar like Name.com. If you already have a name for your Etsy store, this step should be easy—you’ll probably want your domain name to be the same as your Etsy store name. Use our domain search tool to make sure the domain you want is available for registration. If it is, just add it to your cart and check out just like you would for any other purchase.
How to choose the right domain name for your Etsy shop
You have a ton of options available when it comes to choosing a domain extension, or what it says on the right of the “dot.” While traditional domain endings are perfectly OK to use, many store owners find that their preferred domain name might already be in use or is being resold by a private owner at a high cost. But with hundreds of New Domain endings now available, you can register a domain that reflects your brand and even describes your business. For example, if you sell handcrafted jewelry, use a domain like yourbusines.jewelry.
These are just a few of the New Domain endings you can use for your Etsy store when you register a domain: .SALE, .FORSALE, .MARKET, .DESIGN, .CLOTHING, .GIFTS, .JEWELRY, .GLASS, .GALLERY, or .STUDIO.
Additional tools you’ll need
If you are planning on running your business solely through Etsy, you don’t need much more than a domain name. But it’s always a good practice to purchase Advanced Security any time you purchase a domain name. This service keeps the information that you give to ICANN (the governing internet body) out of public view, preventing strangers from accessing your information online. Step 2: Redirect the domain to your Etsy shop
Now that you have a custom domain name, it’s time to forward it to your Etsy store. We make this incredibly simple at Name.com with our Etsy app. Head to Name.com and choose the Apps link under the Websites tab on the main navigation bar. Scroll down until you find the Etsy app and click Get Started to begin. Note that you must be logged into your Name.com account to continue with setup.
Use the drop-down field to find the custom domain that you’d like to use to direct customers to your Etsy store. Once you’ve selected a domain, a new section will appear below where you can enter your Etsy store information.
Enter your Etsy username into the field and press Complete Setup, and you’re all done.
Step 3: Try our your custom Etsy URL
Try the redirect out for yourself to make sure everything is working properly. Type your custom domain into a browser and press enter—the domain should send you to your Etsy store. URL forwarding is usually a pretty quick process, but occasionally needs a little more time to finish setting up. If your custom domain does not automatically forward you to your Etsy page, give it a few minutes then try again.
